Chimneys & leadwork

Chimney work, lead flashing & lead welding

The chimney and its flashings are the single most common source of roof leaks. We repoint, rebuild and re-dress with proper milled lead — including welded and decorative leadwork most firms won't touch.

Where the chimney meets the roof, water is always looking for a way in. The join has to be sealed with lead that is cut, dressed and lapped correctly — not smeared over with sand-and-cement, which cracks within a season and lets the wet straight through. If your leak is near a chimney, the flashing is the first place we look.

Proper lead, properly dressed

We use code-4 and code-5 milled lead, cut to size, dressed to the tile profile and chased into the brickwork the way it should be. Soakers, step flashings, aprons and back gutters — all formed to shed water where it belongs. It is slower and it is skilled, and it is the difference between a fix that lasts and one you call us back about.

Lead welding & decorative leadwork

Lead welding (lead burning) lets us form seamless, watertight joints and bespoke details that a folded lap simply can't achieve — the mark of a proper leadworker. From welded corners and outlets to decorative lead ridges and feature bosses on period and high-end properties, this is craftsmanship, and it's something we genuinely enjoy getting right.

Repointing & rebuilds

Perished mortar joints, spalled bricks and leaning stacks are common on older Bristol chimneys. We repoint, rebuild and re-cap as needed, and can remove a redundant stack and make the roof good if it is no longer wanted.

Chimney work, lead flashing & lead welding — recent jobs

Good to know

Common questions

Why does my chimney leak when it rains hard?

Nine times out of ten it is failed flashing — usually an old mortar fillet that has cracked. Replacing it with correctly dressed lead solves it for good.

What is lead welding and do I need it?

Lead welding (lead burning) fuses lead together for a seamless, watertight joint — used for complex junctions, outlets and decorative details. It's a specialist skill that gives a far stronger, neater result than folded lead alone.

Can you remove a chimney we no longer use?

Yes. We can take a redundant stack down to below roof level and tile over the opening so the roofline is sound and watertight.
